Do You Need a Model Release for Groups of People at an Event

  • Not all group photographs will need a signed release. If the persons are not easily identifiable no release is necessary.
  • If they can be identified but the image is not used in a way that can be seen as an endorsement of or association with something or someone, then generally speaking, a release will not be needed either. This is typically the case where a photographer uses an image for his/her portfolio.
  • Similarly, photographs of recognizable people or property need no release if used for editorial purposes such as newspapers, magazines etc.

It's not in the taking of the photograph where the issue may be, but what the photographer will be using the image for afterwards!

And this is what the model release is for. It's an agreement where the person being photographed grants permission to the photographer (or publisher) to use the image commercially or however else specified.

The onus for having the required model release forms in place will be on the publisher, but photographers can make their images more commercially usable by having signed releases.

Does One Need Model Release Forms for Street Photography

A person in a public space has no resonable right to privacy, so you do not need a release for taking photographs of people in public.

NOTE: You need to be cognizant that although some places may be regarded as public e.g. a restaurant or wedding venue or nursery school playground, you may need to get permission from the owners of the establishment to take photographs.

All our model release forms are provided as sample documents and are intended for informational purposes only. A lawyer in your jurisdiction is best equipped to advise on specific legal matters.
